Xbox Game Pass subscribers flocked to social media to voice their discontent regarding the lacklustre advanced graphical options in Still Wakes the Deep. Studio The Chinese Room confirmed the PC versions of its recently released survival horror title did not share the same features across all platforms. While Still Wakes the Deep is part of the Xbox Game Pass library, subscribers noticed their PC copies of the game lacked several upscaling and super-resolution options that were included for the Epic Games and Steam versions.

For context, Still Wakes the Deep is a first-person psychological horror game developed by The Chinese Room, known for its work on Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture and Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs. The story is set in 1975 and takes place on an offshore oil rig in the North Sea. Players are put into the shoes of Cameron McLeary, an unfortunate electrician who is stranded on the rig alongside a mysterious monster. The horror game was added to Xbox Game Pass upon its release, and Microsoft even helped promote Still Wakes the Deep during the recent Xbox Games Showcase.

Despite Microsoft’s help in its promotion, the Game Pass version of Still Wakes the Deep for PC notably did not include several popular upscaling options, such as Nvidia’s Deep-Learning Super Sampling and AMD’s Fidelity FX Super Resolution 3. Game Pass subscribers were subsequently displeased by the limited options offered by their version of the title, leading to the creation of several threads on the r/XboxGamePass subreddit pointing out the differences between PC platforms and criticizing the developer. Other commenters additionally blamed Microsoft for Still Wakes the Deep‘s release, with some asking why such a popular graphical feature for modern games was not included.

The Chinese Room Responds to Xbox Game Pass Subscribers

It was only a matter of time before subscribers began directing questions to Still Wakes the Deep‘s Steam page, and to their credit, a staff member of The Chinese Room even addressed one user’s query. The developer claimed the difference in graphical options between PC platforms resulted from how the Xbox Game Pass system functioned. They explained that adding the same features to the Game Pass’ PC version was not as simple as flicking a switch and would require a custom-coded solution. The Chinese Room developer also notably implied that there were currently no plans to add more upscaling options but promised the studio would inform players if a solution was discovered.

While the Xbox Game Pass version of Still Wakes the Deep might not offer the same features as Steam and Epic Games, subscribers who aren’t too worried about advanced graphical options will find an entertaining survival horror game. Many critics have praised Still Wakes the Deep for its atmospheric tension and unique setting, meaning fans of the genre might still find something to keep them on the edge of their seats.
