Toys for Bob, the game developer behind Skylanders and the most recent Crash Bandicoot and Sypro entires, has announced plans to partner with Xbox to publish its next unannounced title. Under this new agreement, Xbox will publish the title as an indie.
The studio originally joined Activision in 2005 after publishing several titles with Crystal Dynamics. Its Skylanders games (and accompanying physical toys) became a multi-billion dollar franchise before being discontinued.
Toys for Bob joined Microsoft alongside the rest of Activision Blizzard in October 2023. At the time of the acquisition announcement, then Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick told GamesBeat that Microsoft’s supply chain and manufacturing resources would go a long way in reviving the toys-to-life Skylanders franchise. However, Toys for Bob will have to do this separately from Activision. Microsoft spun off the developer into an independent studio in February 2024.
This announcement confirms rumors of a deal between Toys for Bob and Xbox to publish a new game once the studio became independent earlier this year. In contrast to supporting this developer, Microsoft closed a number of high profile independent studios earlier this month. These included Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks, Roundhouse Studios and Alpha Dog Games.
