Skale Labs teams up with Unity on Web3 game development

Skale Labs, a simple and low cost and Ethereum-compatible blockchain, announced it has teamed up with Unity to support blockchain games.

San Francisco-based Skale Labs is a gas-less Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible blockchain designed for secure Ethereum scaling. That means it has no computing fees associated with blockchain transactions and it works with the popular Ethereum blockchain.

Skale Labs CEO Jack O’Holleran said in an interview with GamesBeat that his company will be a key blockchain partner to participate in Unity’s publisher support program. Now developers on Skale can leverage Unity’s world-class services for premier Web3 game development, he said.

“We share a common vision. If you make developers successful, your efforts will be successful. And so this is a clear push toward putting the developer first for both Skale and Unity,” O’Holleran said.

“Web3 has grown massively over the last two years. We’re really seeing this blurring of the lines over what is a blockchain game and there are games with alternative monetization and liquidity mechanism,” O’Holleran said. “[Developers] are building fun games on Unity that also leverage other technical infrastructures like blockchain. And so as part of that, Skale as a network is stepping up and is the first partner with Unity to be part of the publisher program.”

He added, “What we’re able to do is provide white glove full service to select developers within the Skale ecosystem to be able to leverage Unity’s premium publisher support.”

“We are the first Web3 gaming infrastructure project to be able to leverage this. And we’re getting huge support upfront from their partnership teams and alliances,” O’Holleran said. “The amount of people they can through at this in terms of marketing and support towards our project will be massive. Unity has this full suite of services that have typically been dedicated only to large gaming publishers.”

In the past few months, Skale has been averaging 50 million transactions a month and it has around five million unique active wallets, as well as five of the top 20 blockchain games on its network.

“If you look at the number of people who are playing Web3 games, compared to the three billion-plus people who play games every day, the numbers are still small. But the trajectory and growth rate is massive.”

“The games and development that have come out of Unity over the years are second to none, and we’re thrilled to be the first blockchain partner to participate in the Publisher Support Program,” said O’Holleran. “We believe our developers deserve the best, and Unity gives our ecosystem access to unmatched gaming resources. With this collaboration, Skale Labs asserts its dedication to gaming and gamers.”

The publisher support program supports devs with dedicated project managers who will act as strategic advisers. It also provides guidance and best practices to accelerate project development. And it assists with bug handling and project reviews while supporting technical art and architecture, coding, and performance.

“We are thrilled that Unity’s publisher support services will now empower SKALE developers to confidently build secure and immersive gaming experiences, reducing game development costs and time to market,” said Andrew Boushie, client partnerships at Unity, in a statement. “We look forward to supporting and providing resources to the next generation of game developers.”

The flexible programs will enable Skale Labs to strategically support development studios by efficiently providing the assistance they require to overcome obstacles and stay on track. Each Skale project will be given a success plan with allocated points for different services. Each success plan is custom-built for each project with one Project Review and one Accelerator sprint among other services.

Skale Labs is the foundation behind Skale Network, a gas-less EVM-compatible modular blockchain, which is designed to provide a good experience for builders of games, AI, SocialFi, and Web3 applications.

As of Q1 2024, Skale Network serves over 10 million monthly active users and saves billions in monthly gas fees with its innovative modular architecture. Skale Chains feature high performance, zero gas fees, enhanced security, and instant finality, making them ideal for a wide range of decentralized applications.

With a commitment to driving the mass adoption of Web3 technologies, Skale empowers developers and businesses to build scalable, efficient, and user-centric blockchain applications. On the Skale network, developers can deploy their own EVM-compatible blockchain by unlocking advanced features such as AI/ML smart contracts, on-chain file storage, interchain messaging, and zero-cost minting.

With a focus on speed, security, and decentralization, Skale Labs was founded in 2018 by O’Holleran and Stan Kladko. Skale has 50 people, and it has raised $30 million to date. Collectively, there are about a thousand developers working on projects on Skale’s network. There are over 800 nodes in the network.

As for competition, O’Halleran sees the stigma against blockchain in the mass market as the biggest barrier, and he thinks that is going away rapidly.

Skale has no gas fees for its network. That means there are no transaction fees related to use of computing power on the network, in contrast to other blockchains. There is also a seamless custodial wallet integration so normal folks can participate in the blockchain games. They don’t have to use cryptocurrencies to do transactions.

“We have removed the hurdles and dramatically changed the onboarding process,” O’Holleran said. “We’re approaching the knee of the curve. And we’re about ready to see a huge breakout. We’re already seeing the numbers dramatically increase each day. each month.”
