NYC swimmers seen cooling off inside public pool weeks before they are open for summer

Summer may not yet be hopping in NYC — but pool hoppers already are.

A New York Post photographer caught two young men enjoying a pleasant dip in a public pool in Queens — even though city pools don’t open for three more weeks. 

New Yorkers aren’t supposed to be able to cool off in any of the city’s 91 pools until June 27, but two people defied city officials’ expectations and the gates at Astoria Park Pool to take a dip in the water.

The two can be seen wearing tanks tops and shorts sitting in the knee deep water as they look back at the camera. It wasn’t clear how they got in — but there was no lifeguard present. 

“We want New Yorkers to enjoy our pools safely this summer. Patrons should only swim during operating hours when lifeguards are on duty,” a Department of Parks and Recreation spokesperson told The Post.

Most city pools aren’t filled with water yet this time of year, but the Astoria pool was filled earlier than usual due to a recent construction project, a Department source told The Post. 

Police said they had received no reports of trespassing at the public pool.

Since the end of May, beaches have been opened daily for swimming with lifeguards on duty from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 

The season ends September 8.
