The “o” in GPT-4o stands for omni, which means OpenAI has a lock on every communication channel with the release of its new flagship model. And while their new model is out here reasoning across audio, vision and text in real time, the company keeps making headlines. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is reportedly considering going for-profit, while ChatGPT is helping cure cancer and former chief scientist and co-founder Ilya Sutskever lurks in the shadows, leaving to working on his own “safe superintelligence” company, that appears to be a competitor to OpenAI.
Meanwhile, in the wake of Sutskever’s departure, the company has taken several measures to show that it is serious about safety, and has hired retired Army General Paul Nakasone, who is marching onto the newly reconstituted board of directors, bringing his big “former commander of U.S. Cyber Command and director of the National Security Agency” energy along with him – and for some reason Elon Musk needs everyone to know he was the one to come up with the name OpenAI.
So yeah, it’s been a big month (really, several years) for OpenAI and things just never slow down in the brave new future.
